My Nascar League 2006

Fantasy League

 My Chase for the Cup!

Before the season started we had to pick a single driver for every race of the 2006 Nextel Cup Series. You could list 5 drivers, to use three seperate times during the season. For the rest of the races, and the rest of the drivers, you could only use a driver once. Points are received every week, from where your driver finishes in the race. Since 43 cars race every week, if your driver finishes 1st, you receive 43 points for the week. If your driver finishes 2nd, you receive 42 points. For third, you receive 41 points. etc. Down to last place,(43rd,) you receive 1 point. You also receive 5 extra points if your driver for the week places first, and an additional 5 points if your driver qualifies for pole position before that weeks race. At the end of the season, your point total ranks you in the league, and the prize pool of about $1,500 is paid out, along with the Nextel Fantasy League Cup Championship.

Since most of my band is in this same league, the big money, means big bragging rights. Were taking it way too seriously.

*In this section below, I will update every week of how I am doing in the league.

Dale Earnhardt Jr. #8 31st 0 +20 11th

The Coca-Cola 600 is the longest race of the year. It holds a ton of room for lead changes and making up mistakes. Junior was fast! After suffering a penalty for pitting outside his box, he was held for a lap. But he had enough time to make up th edifference. If it was not for him having to pit for gas in the last 40 laps, he may have had a shot. A 11th place was pretty good, but a top ten would have been better.

Jimmy Johnson failed to repeat his domination of Lowes, when Kasey Kahne had the car to beat. No one came close in the last 15 laps to make a fair chase for the win. This marks Kasey's 3rd win of the year, tying Jimmy Johnson for the most wins thus far.

A ton of people picked JJ for the race, so a ton of top points were given out in the league. With a 11th place finish from Junior, I slipped to forth place. Not too bad, since it could have been worse. But it puts me to the wall these next two weeks. I need a huge point maker in the next two weeks, or I fear to fall off the leaderboard.

Next Race: Dover

Operation: June-Bug turns to Biffle on the Monster Mile. He won this race last year, but that really means nothing. What does help, is he has had as good of a car set up as anyone all year, just some bad luck has taken him out of the top ten, and he is in much need for some good finishes. That makes two of us, so I feel confident that this week we will have a strong showing.

After a tough couple of weeks for my team, anything less could result in ending our season early.

Next Weeks Driver

 OPERATION: REDLINE

At the begining of the season, when we made our picks, we choose April for a strong run at the leaderboard. At the end of the month marks the end of the first quarter of the season. This is our mission for the rest of the month of April.

4/9/06 Texas Motor Speedway= 1.5 mile oval track. *After two weeks of short tracks, we are back into some faster speeds. My Driver is #20 Tony Stewart, who won last week in Martinsville. His current odds in Vegas for a win in Texas is 10-1. After week #6, he is in 8th place for total season point standings.

4/22/06 Phoenix International Raceway= 1.0 mile oval track. *This will be the first night race of the season, so we are all excited to be racing under the lights. My driver will be #16 Greg Biffle, who is always a strong driver, but seldom takes the win. Current Vegas odds are unavailable, but will probably end up to be 20-1, if not better. This will be his debut appearance for my team this season. I will have him drive for me 2 more times by the end of the year.

4/30/06 Talladega Motor Speedway= 2.66 mile tri-oval track. *A huge track, which means huge speeds, and huge crashes. You need to be tough, and they don't get much tougher then Smoke. #20 Tony Stewart is my driver for this race, and he will be expected to make some bumps throughout the afternoon. Hopefully by the end of this race, I will be on top of the leaderboard. Vegas odds are unavailable, but I would have to put him at a 6-1, to 10-1 for Week#9 in Talladega.

This Weeks Drivers Car Start Laps Lead +/- Finish Kasey Kahne #9 1st 41 -20 21st

The track too tough to tame held true to the tires. The difference between fresh tires made a huge speed difference. Biffle came away with his second straight win at the Dodge Charger 500. My driver, Kasey Kahne, held well for the first 100 laps, but after that it was down hill for the #9 car. I believe it was a result of underadjustments that sealed his fate with a 21st finish. During practice they found a good set up right away, and it proved to hold up when he qualified with pole position. But when it came time for pit stops the team tried not to diviate too much from the original set up, and Kasey started to complain that his car was still too tight after the stops. He was easily passed all over the track.

I remain in third place in the money league, but the point totals are closer then ever. To mantain my position I am going to need three great weeks out of my scheduled drivers. We have a by week with the all star race coming up, then it's operation: June-Bug.

Next race: Lowes

Operation: June-Bug starts with Dale Earnhardt Jr. in North Carolina for the Coke 600. I have a strong three week driver schedule, but it's anchored by Jr. How he does will really become my fate within my league. Do well, and I have a chance to make the chase, fall short, and I will only be racing for the money, and maybe only the top ten.

Looking over the money league, the true match up is going to be Jr. vs, Jimmy Johnson in the Coke 600. If Junior can place higher, I have a chance to stay in the chase. We need to get the team back to full speed, after a two week digger by our drivers.

Last Race: Richmond

This Weeks Drivers Car Start Laps Lead +/- Finish dale Jarrett #88 26th *43rd for working past qual. 0 +4 21st

Richmond held up to its reputation for being a speedway caught in a short track layout. The first night race of the month of May held plenty of suprises. We had many top drivers sent to the garage with engine trouble. Kasey, Kenseth, and Gordon fell victim. Kevin Harvick, (who had won the Busch series race on Friday night,) had the car to beat, but choosing not to pit during a late caution, costed him the race. Junior, Hamlin, and Kyle Busch came back with fresh tires and had him beat. By the time #29 did pit, during another caution, it was too late. June-Bug had them all beat, and never looked back, snapping a 27 race winless streak. A week late from his fathers tribute, but perfect timing for Juniors year thus far.

You know your driver is not doing all that well, when you never see him on tv all night. Dale Jarrett qualified at the 26th position, but was sent back to end of the line, after his team was forced to work on his car after qualifing. He did a great job with working past half of the field, but never made it into the top 20.

With a below average finish for me, I only fell one spot in the league to third. I would have remained in second if Pole Sitter would not have gotten the 5 point bonus for the win, when he had Junior riding for him.

Next Race: Darlington

Darlington is the oldest track in Nascar, and one of the hardest to tame by even the most skilled driver. With it's seperate corners, it makes for some high speeds and much needed driver skill. When most of the league will be choosing more expereinced drivers, I am going with Kasey Kahne. #9 has had a great year, fallowing his sophmore slump, with the exception of the last two weeks. I am hoping he regains his postion in the top 5 of the league in Darlington, a track where he has faired well the three times he has raced there.

He has become one of my favorite drivers, and will possibly make my A team next year. This will be my only time I drive him this year, since he is on my B-squad. He still has looked good, even though his luck has been tough these last weeks. I really need a top 5 finish from him, and I have secret hopes for a win next week in Darlington. Go #9!

Last weeks race Talladega

This Weeks Drivers Car Start Laps Lead +/- Finish Tony Stewart #20 2nd 11 0 2nd

Talladega is tough! It's tough racing, tough track, and tough luck. Tough Tony did exactly what you need to do in this track. Stay away from the big chrash, stay calm, and keep yourself in a position to make a run for the lead at the end. In a race that took many top drivers out in the first 9 laps, and a record breaking lead changes for the track, Talladega lived up to it's name. Tony kept clear of trouble, after flipping in the Busch race earlier this weekend, and made a great run for the win, but could not catch Jimmy Johnson in the last two laps. Tony Stewart placed second for the sixth time at the track.

All eyes were on Junior for the race, dressing his car in all black in honor of his father. The #8 car has done well on the track and was a favorite for the win. Eight total people, from the league, choose Junior to race for them this week. He spun out, reversed his engine, and ended up blowing it with 50 laps to go. He ended his day, and most of the leagues hopes for a big score. With Stewart's 2nd place, and Junior's DNF, put me in a strong second place in the league, and gained points on the leader.

Next weeks race Richmond

Richmond is a short track, and we will be racing under the lights for the whole month of May. A short track with a speedway feel to it, since it is not a traditional oval shape.  It makes for some top horse power, and a lot of breaking. A vetrans touch is a strong contender for a short track after Tallaega. With some of the younger drivers shaken up after wrecking this last weekend, my safe bet is to go with an older driver. #88 Dale Jarrett, is my driver for the kick off of May.

He has won twice on the track in Richmond. Although I am not dependent on a win, I am hoping for a top ten finish. Anything better then 15th place should hold me on the leaderboard. Possibly could drop me from second place, but I can't play to keep second, nor am I in the position to make a run for the leader this week. Dale Jarrett will be my factor on weather or not I will try to make a move later this month, since I am the only team that can mathematically catch our leader within a single race. It's all up to how well the #88 (the UPS car,) can go against whatever his driver will be. What can brown do for you?

Last Race Phoenix

Oh what a weekend for Biffle. After a nightmare of a race in Texas, with not finishing the race after a run in with Busch, he needed a strong race in Phoenix. It looked great, leading the most laps of the race, and he had a great car. But with no cautions in something like the last 70 laps, the fear of running out of gas was on the minds of most drivers. And in pure, I can't believe my driver just gave up the race, Biffle turned into the pits with two laps left. (While in second place!) He didn't run out of gas yet, but was feared that he would. I understand he was racing for the season, but it doesn't sit well with my team this week. Greg Biffle, single handedly drove me to drink this weekend. Operation Redline is going to need a strong performance by Smoke this next week, to make it any sort of success.

With more salt to the wound, we had a strong chance to gain some points on the league leader, but his choice of Jeff Burton proved to actualy gain points on us. Of course we don't know what anyone elses picks were, because the two weeks off found not enough time for our league workers to post them. A Body at Rest, Tends to Stay at Rest!

Next week Talladega

It doesn't get any faster then Talladega! With my pick of Smoke as my driver, I feel really good about nexts weeks race. 2.6 miles of pedal to the floor, 200+ mph. Big banks, big speeds, bid chrashes, and big drivers! Talladega is alot of Nascar fans favorite track, and it makes for big plans for Sunday afternoon.

Tony Stewart has had a great season so far, and has had a great last three weeks. In the last two weeks he has come back from the last of the pack to first no problem. It doesn't matter where he starts, because he is bound to make it into the top 5 by the end.

I need a strong placing from Tony this week. In week two of Operation Redline I took a hit. This week could be one of the deciding moments of my season. Win big, and I will be strongly placed in the top 5, lose big, and my season may be lost into the middle of league. All fingers crossed for Talladega!

After finally releasing next weeks picks, it looks like everyone went with the safe pick with Junior. Wherever Junior winds up, will make a dramatic effect on the league. So, it looks like

 Last Race: Texas

This Weeks Drivers Car Start Laps Lead +/- Finish Tony Stewart #20 40th 99 +37 3rd

After a poor qualifing run, Smoke started at 40th place. But he also raced the track on Friday in the Iroc series and won it. It marked his first victory in Texas, and also a two race winning streak after Martinsville. Although he had a lot of work to do on Sunday. Evan after he lost his ac in the car and almost got hit by Carl Edwards after he spun out, he raced well, and lead for most of the afternoon. Within 20 laps he was already in the top 5. After holding the lead, he got racing with Kasey Kahne, and it was a great battle for the lead. Stewart knew he could not hold him off and gave him the go ahead. He also could not hold of Kenseth, and slipped to third.

Of course, our league leader had Kenseth, so he once again had a great week. My third place finish put me back into the top 5, after two weeks falling out to the top 10. The first week of Operation Redline was a success. Let's hope it is a sign for things to come.

Next Race: Phoenix

Going into the off week for Easter, we look forward to our first night race under the lights. Since my driver is #16 Greg Biffle, I look forward to his attitude. Last week in Texas, he was Ax's driver, and was wiped out by Kurt Busch, after a strong start for the good driver. It ended his day, and was very frustrated. There was even a showdown between Biffles girlfriend, and Kurt Busch's, on top of Busch's pit command. Too funny! I expect him to have a great week, since he slipped so bad in the point totals. Look for some revenge against Kurt in Phoenix.

With the point totals close within the top 10 of the league, and The Commish had another great week with a second place finish. So, number 2 is all we can race for within the month of April. Turns out, the Commish has picked, Jeff Burton in Phoenix, so I do hope to get some points towards him. As of now I am in third place, behind Adam, who has also picked Greg Biffle this week. I will not be able to gain my 5 points on him this week, so I seem to be racing this week to keep third place, with the number #16.

Last Race - Martinsville

This Weeks Drivers Car Start Laps Lead +/- Finish Mark Martin #6 30th 0 +17 13th

All the rivals leading up to this week were a no-show on the track in Martinsville. After this seasons second short track race, the older drivers kept to their game plan, and ended the race with hardly a scratch. Some of the others were not as fortunate. Dale Jr. got cracked up in lap 2, that left his front bumper to be removed for the rest of the race. He put on quite a show with coming back twice with a fast car to end in 4th place.

Tony Stewart lead most of the race, and finished it too. Jimmy Johnson had another great day on the track and shared exchanged leading laps with Smoke. The big suprise was Kasey Kahne, who has looked great all year, and looked great for the begining of the race. Engine trouble moved him from the leading pact, to finish at a disappointing 25th.

Mark Martin was my driver for the week, and turned out a great finish, exactly where I wanted him to. I was disappointed with his starting position of 30th, and was hoping for a top 15 finish. After a long afternoon, and a few bump ups, he made is way through the pact and ended in 13th place. I could not ask for a better race from him, after a poor qualifing position. With a 13th place finish, I moved from 8th place to 6th in the league.

Next Week - Texas

Enough with the short tracks, let's get back to some serious distance sprinting. This week we race at Texas Motor Speedway. A beautiful track with the, 'Don't Mess with Texas,' attitude. The short tracks were a lot of fun, but it's time to bring the speeds up. With the longer track, we get bigger speeds, bigger attitude, and bigger bragging rights within the league.

The month of April will take us to the quarter mark of the season. While making my picks, at the begining of the season, we had planned on a strong April showing. 'Operation Redline,' begins next week, with my driver #20 Tony Stewart. All three races this month are from my top 5, with two races by Stewert, and my debut of Greg Biffle. At this point, we figured to be in the top ten, and would force our way into the top 5 by the end of April. While sitting at 6th place, before, 'Operation Redline,' our chances look good in the coming month. We are hoping to get back into the top 3 by the quarter mark of the season.

But it may be tough, after another impressive showing of our league leader this week. Another win, has put him into a bigger lead then before. I believe he is sitting at a 50% winning streak, and it has to stop soon. I'm a bit frustrated by the league not pubishing everyones complete season picks, so that we can take a look into the future, and compare picks. But, I guess we all should have known that it would not be a complete interactive site, because I don't think they are aware of all the potential in the software they are using.

After week #5

This Weeks Drivers Car Start Laps Lead +/- Finish Jeff Burton #31 18th 0 -16 34th

The season just hit full force after Bristol. Tempers flared, and rivals were awoken, during the first short track race of the season. After an afternoon full of car wrecks and smoke, bumping and running, emotions started to run high, and the race turned ugly. Kurt Busch bumped Matt Kenseth on the last lap, to take the checkered flag. Qualifying was snowed out, so starting line-ups were made using last years owner points, with Tony Stewart racing from the pole. Plenty of bruises after Bristol, and plenty of pissed off drivers going into Martinsville. No doubt, Jeff Gordon will still be upset after getting spun by Kenseth, and a shoving match immediately fallowing the race.

Within the league, I received the biggest digger of the week. I had been holding on to second place for three weeks, till I sank to 8th, this week with Jeff Burton. He looked good, but had a few spinouts that stopped him from making too much progress.

The rest of the league stayed pretty intact, besides Lutz and Adam. Who both moved up four positions. And Lightning entered the top ten for the first time this year. Adam slipped out of the top 5 for the first time after Atlanta, but returned after the first short track.

Next week

This week in Martinsville, (another short track) I will be using another dark horse driver, with Mark Martin taking the wheel. The Viagra, driving old dog, of the league. He has raced very well this year in the Nextel Series, with an average finish of 7th place. (4 top ten, 1 top 5.) He is also leading the Craftsman series at this point in the season. Although his odds in Vegas don't show it, I would put money on him for a top 5 in Martinsville. I'm hoping for at least a top ten finish, to keep me in the top ten in our fantasy league. After this week, I will make a run to get back into the top 5, when we race in Texas. That will begin my three week push to the top of the leader board. By Richmond, I hope to be in the top three of the league.

Although the points race may get tough. After 2 weeks of picking winners, our leader is starting to build a cushion with the bonus points he has been racking up. Two weeks ago he received a perfect score with 5 bonus points for the pole, and winning the race. This week he received them for winning again.

After Week #4

Ok, it wasn't exactly hot-lanta for everyone, but for Kasey Kahne it sure was. After qualifing for pole position on Friday, taking 2nd in the Busch Series race on Saturday, he wrapped up the weekend with a win on Monday in the Nextel Series. The race was scheduled on Sunday, but the rain kept them off the track till Monday morning. Because in Nascar, they race. They like to race a lot.

The big focus within my league was on #99 Carl Edwards, this week in Atlanta. It seemed as though quite a few people had him picked for a three-peat, at the track. 44 laps into it, an over excited Edwards got tangled with a bumber coming out of pit row. His day was done from there on. The leader of our leagues point total, took a digger in week #4! I couldn't be happier.

But I am! I had Dale Jr. driving for me this weekend, and oh, what a show. Dale did have his coming out party, with his best finish yet, into this early season. Can you dig it? He kept passing all day on the outside. Marching up the rankings twice. After making it into the top 5, he blew a tire. He fell out of the lead lap, but he had a fast car. It didn't take him long to continue to dominate the rest of the way. Dale Jr finished 3rd. A Budwieser would taste pretty good right now.

next week

Bristol is next week, and it's a short track. That means high speed, and holding on for life. My Driver for the race is #31 Jeff Burton. He's one of my dark horse picks, but he has done well enough in Nextel, and he is doing great in the Bush Series. It's a short track, and a short gap for the leaderboard. Again, I stay in second place, after week #4. But there was a big shake up on the leaderboard. Our leader fell from grace, from first to 8th place. It's too bad Carl Edwards bit the big one in Hot-lanta.

After Week #3

There is a huge difference between the race in Vegas, and next weeks race in Atlanta. Since the track in Vegas is flat, it makes it really difficult to pass. In Atlanta, the banks on the track make it more driver friendly. It is considered the fastest track in Nascar, so expect a ton of high speed crashes, and cars not being able to finish the race.

Looking over everyone elses picks for next week, the real focus is on #99 Carl Edwards, (who won this race last year.) Since a huge number of people picked #99 in next weeks race, where he finishes, will make a huge difference in the fantasy league. If Dale can finish better then Carl on Sunday, I may get some more breathing room on the leaderboard, and may also bring our leader of the fantasy league off the top of the list.

Dale qualified low, for a starting position of 26th place. Which changes his odds on the Vegas line from 10-1, to 12-1. So, it looks like Dale has a full day of work on Sunday ahead of him, in order to get a respectable finish. The good news is #99 will be starting from another tough spot with an 18th position. Georgia is on my mind.

I hope you have fun with your fantasy league and you kick there asses!

Glad to see Paul has made your wall of fame, he is very deserving of that honour, I do believe.  I just wish we could get him to stay blogging, but he's still posting on other people's blogs, so that's a good thing!

Take care :)
